Peg the Patriarchy

My Peg The Patriarchy t-shirt makes a gorgeous orgy out of all the other parts of me: sex educator, burlesque swooner and crafting goddess. I think equity is sexy and I wanted to wear art that spoke to that. From that desire, the Peg The Patriarchy t-shirt was born.

I remember when Dan Savage coined ‘pegging’ back in 2001. Pre-blog days, I was actively picking up NOW Magazine and immediately flipping to the Savage Love column, and then horoscopes. Always fascinated and curious by sex and other people’s ideas about pleasure, I loved that we now had a word for a woman wearing a strap-on and penetrating a man.

Fast forward to the end of my 10-year marriage, my ensuring sexual freedom post-marriage (aka Year of the Fuckery) and identity exploration gone wild. Do I personally like pegging? Let’s leave it at, I teach a Strap-on Play 101 class and I don’t like tomatoes, so I don’t teach a Tomato 101 class.

Peg the Patriarchy for me represented a symbolic penetration of the patriarchal structures that play out in sex, dating and romantic relationships. It’s b20160702_014300een rough being a sexually empowered woman dating online where misogyny, racism, body shaming and threats are all a daily part of my dating app inboxes. Despite having more empowerment to express myself sexually and options, patriarchy (and other forms of oppression) are making it unsafe and inaccessible for me to date and fuck the way that I want to.

Peg the Patriarchy is my climactic moan for solidarity that equity IS sexy. That systemic barriers do influence how wet my panties get. That misogyny doesn’t give me a butterfly boner. And that I won’t tolerate it, I will peg it…I will find my own erotic power in both sex and activism to Peg the Patriarchy.
